CATTLE IMPROVEMENT SCHEME
The Cattle Improvement Scheme (CIS) helps maintain and improve the quality of livestock produced on croft land. CIS provides grant assistance to crofting townships, grazing committees and other crofting cattle producers and groups who hire bulls from the Crofters Commission’s stud farm.
The Scheme now operates under what is known as a De Minimus State Aid, which is the only basis on which this support can legally be delivered. Under De Minimus State Aid provisions, support over 3 fiscal years per individual is capped at €7,500 from the various De Minimus State Aid Schemes. If an agricultural business receives grants from any other public body it is possible that they may also be De Minimus Schemes and would therefore also count towards the total allowance. As a result grant towards the hire of a bull must be proportionally allocated between all participating crofters and their details must be provided on the application form.
